Why did I choose to become a teacher?
My journey to becoming a teacher was one that started at primary school, but one that I didn't really realise until much later - after having finished a degree in psychology. I've always been curious and imaginative. I've often wondered 'why' and strived to find the answers, whether that meant from a peer, a friend, research, or my imagination. What always interested me was the way different individuals had different takes on the answer.
This is what led me into psychology; understanding why we think the way we do, what influences us and how we become the people we are. It was only after completing my studies in psychology and having those years interspersed with youth work, that I came to realise my call to work with children.
In their smiles, kindness, creativity, and curiosity I could see the light of God and the hope for our future. I realised the amount of things I had learned or remembered through working with youth and how they inspired me to continue to learn and strive to be a better person.

It wasn't long after this realisation that I came across a poem 'What Teachers Make' (by Taylor Mali) and I was reminded of the inspiration my teachers had been for my life and the way many teachers had opened my mind, touched my heart, and helped me to become the person that I am. Soon after I began my studies into becoming a teacher, hoping to be the inspiration to my future students that many teachers had been to me and above all else, teaching students to love and respect one another because of their uniqueness.
Now, having completed my studies and almost finished my first full time year of teaching, I have fleshed out my Teaching Philosophy (and added to my qualifications), and the poem that helped me to realise my call has been made into a webcomic - which, every time I read, helps me to reflect on my journey as a teacher, and all the gifts and challenges it bring.
